“Club drugs”, as they are known, due to their popularity in the bar or club scene, typically include Ecstasy, Ketamine, GHB, and Rohypnol.
Ecstasy
Ecstasy, or MDMA, the most commonly used club drug, is a synthetic (man-made) amphetamine or stimulant, with hallucinogenic properties as well. It is usually found in pill form, but can be seen in capsule or powder form as well. These pills will have any variety of designs, number, symbols, or letters on them, i.e., peace symbol, dollar sign, American flag, cartoon characters, stars, etc., and can be any color. The high is usually felt almost immediately and can last for hours. Users of Ecstasy report feelings of intense pleasure, feelings of affection, increased energy, dizziness, hallucinations and distortions of color and sound. “X” users also experience rapid heart rate, dehydration, anxiety, blurred vision, muscle tension (especially in the jaw area), and nausea. Permanent damage can be seen in areas of the brain, kidneys, liver, and heart. Many young people die using Ecstasy due to heart attacks or severe dehydration.

Ketamine
An analgesic and anesthetic substance used most commonly by veterinarians for surgery, is also being abused in the club scene for its’ high. Users report feelings of intense relaxation, almost a hypnotic state, physical numbness and lack of body control, hallucinations, and an “out-of-body: feeling. Ketamine’s effects are so intense that the user may find themselves in situations they are unable to remember when the drug wears off. It is for this reason that Ketamine has been used in many sexual assault and rape crimes and is considered a “date-rape” drug. Ketamine is usually in the form of a white powder, or a liquid.

GHB
Gamma hydroxy-butyric acid, or GHB, a very potent central nervous system (CNS) depressant, can produce extreme relaxation and mental confusion in the user. It is a naturally occurring substance found in the central nervous system, wine, beef, small citrus fruits and almost all other living creatures in small amounts. In a medical setting, GHB is used as a general anesthetic, to treat conditions such as insomnia, clinical depression, narcolepsy, and alcoholism, and to improve athletic performance. Because of the extreme sense of relaxation and trouble remembering, this is also a drug popular with sexual predators. GHB is a liquid that is clear, odorless, and tastes a little salty, but when mixed with other beverages, it is almost tasteless.

Rohypnol (Roofies)
Rohypnol (Flunitrazepam), another drug used in sexual assault cases, is also a hypnotic anesthetic substance that causes extreme relaxation and muscle weakness, often leaving the user helpless and unable to move. Rohypnol is sometimes used medically to treat insomnia; however, it is almost 10 times stronger than the common sleeping pill.

Meth
Methamphetamine is a highly addictive, very potent synthetic stimulant that is produced in pill form, capsules, powder, and crystallized chunks, referred to as “Ice”. Methamphetamine stimulates the CNS and specifically activates the dopamine center of the brain, causing an over-production of dopamine Small amounts of methamphetamine can result in increased wakefulness, increased physical activity, decreased appetite, increased respiration, rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure, and hyperthermia. Other effects of methamphetamine abuse may include dilated pupils, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, confusion, tremors, convulsions, and cardiovascular collapse and death. Long-term effects may include paranoia, aggressiveness, extreme anorexia, memory loss, visual and auditory hallucinations, delusions, and severe dental problems. Chronic meth users often experience what is described as a sensation of bugs crawling on the skin, leading to compulsive scratching and picking, resulting in open lesions on the skin. Illegal methamphetamine producing operations, “labs”, are found in every state, and are extremely hazardous to be around. Illegal production of methamphetamine usually includes ingredients like ephedrine, iodine, lithium batteries, propane, and paint thinner, etc. Many of these are highly explosive and dangerous to breathe or if come in contact with the skin.

Cocaine
Cocaine is a salt-like, powerfully addictive CNS stimulant that heightens alertness, decreases appetite and the desire to sleep, and results in an intense feeling of pleasure. Crack is the base form (not salt-based) of cocaine, resembling small hard, chunks or rocks, varying in color from white, yellowish-cream, to light brown. Cocaine is usually snorted through the nose, dissolved and then injected intravenously, or applied directly to the nasal membranes or gums. Once in the bloodstream, the effects are usually felt within 10-30 minutes, and can last up to 2 hours. Crack typically enters the bloodstream within 10 seconds, producing a more intense high than powder cocaine, but usually only lasting a few minutes, leading to frequent use to remain high. The “crash”, or disappearance of the high, is abrupt and can be extremely uncomfortable, which cause rapid addiction and craving for more, and often depression. Effects of cocaine/crack include - euphoria, dilated pupils, elevated heart rate, anxiety, hyperactivity, paranoia, and violent behavior. Chronic cocaine users have seven times more risk of heart disease than non-users, and in the first hour of a cocaine high, the risk for heart malfunctions increases by 24 times.

Hallucinogens
Hallucinogens can be synthetic (LSD), or natural (peyote, datura, mescaline, Salvia Divinorum, and certain mushrooms). These substances produce intense hallucinations, along with undesirable effects such as, extreme nausea and vomiting, anxiety, paranoia, dry mouth, dilated pupils, and confusion. These drugs can be eaten, smoked, or injected and the effect can last for several hours. The effect from these drugs can vary greatly from one time to another and from one person to the next. LSD is usually a liquid can be absorbed onto tiny sheets of paper (many with any number of designs on them), for the user to place on their tongue. Hallucinogens can cause permanent brain damage or mental illness.

Steroids
Anabolic-androgenic steroids are man-made substances related to male sex hormones. “Anabolic” refers to muscle-building, and “androgenic” refers to increased masculine characteristics. “Steroids” refers to the class of drugs. These drugs are available legally only by prescription, to treat conditions that occur when the body produces abnormally low amounts of testosterone, such as delayed puberty and some types of impotence. They are also prescribed to treat body wasting in patients with AIDS and other diseases that result in loss of lean muscle mass. Abuse of anabolic steroids, however, can lead to serious health problems, some irreversible.
Today, athletes and others abuse anabolic steroids to enhance performance and also to improve physical appearance. Anabolic steroids are taken orally or injected, typically in cycles of weeks or months (referred to as “cycling”), rather than continuously. Cycling involves taking multiple doses of steroids over a specific period of time, stopping for a period, and starting again. In addition, users often combine several different types of steroids to maximize their effectiveness while minimizing negative effects (referred to as “stacking”).
